Big Ideas Competition 2019

Students from Year 7 and Year 8 at The Halifax Academy have taken part in the regional final of the Big Ideas Competition, a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) competition, organised by S4TP (Solutions for the Planet) a social enterprise that promotes sustainable development and STEM careers for young people.

The two teams, LoveLife and Kinetic Shoes, presented their innovative ideas to an audience of 75, including five judges from industry and academia.

The students were challenged to re-imagine the solution to a real-life problem, such as developing a more efficient way to generate clean energy. They used and developed numerous skills by working scientifically, using data and refining and testing their ideas.

Team LoveLife came 2nd of 11 entries and team Kinetic Shoes received a special commendation for their idea. Both groups were a credit to the academy; teachers from other schools acknowledged their hard work, dedication and presentation skills. The academy's participating students were:

Ferhan Hussain
Muhsin Mehrban
Mujtabaa Nassar
