Unlocking potential with an inspiring mentor

Two students of the The Halifax Academy, Miski Abdirahman and Umayyah Ahmed, have been developing their confidence, self-belief and motivation through their participation in the AQA Unlocking Potential programme - an eight month transformational mentoring programme for young people aged 14-19 years of age. The girls are enjoying working with their mentor Jenny Wallwork, former world number five badminton player and Commonwealth Games medal winner.

The Unlocking Potential programme aims to raise young people’s aspirations and expectations on future life goals, whether from school to Further Education, Further Education to Higher Education, or into training and employment. The programme enables young people to work with and learn from Dame Kelly Holmes Trust’s team of inspirational athlete mentors.

The girls have been working alongside local charity UC3, planning and promoting their social action project, which has given them a chance to make a difference in their community as well developing important life skills such as organisation and self-awareness. They have travelled to Manchester to meet other young people who are taking part and to celebrate their achievements on the programme.
