The Governing Body is responsible for ensuring that the school provides the best possible quality education for the students of The Halifax Academy.
Whilst the Headteacher is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school, the Governing Body is involved in developing the school’s aims and policies as well as a number of other important duties including, monitoring and evaluating the school’s effectiveness and holding the school to account for its performance.
Dr Phil Shepherd - Chair
Phil has been a governor of The Halifax Academy, and its predecessor Halifax High School, for over 20 years and was appointed as Chair of Trustees in September 2015. He has governed through a period of change to academy status, the addition of the Primary Phase and the transition to Multi Academy Trust. Phil has taught at Bradford Grammar School for many years and is currently Director of STEM at the Rodillian Academy in Wakefield.
Ms India Annison
As staff governor, India is the Marketing and Communications Specialist for the academy, ensuring that the brand image and our websites are maintained. India is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and has several years’ experience in communications having previously worked for Calderdale College as PR and Events Officer. India is also the Career’s Link Governor for the academy.
Ms Surraya Bibi
Surraya is currently working for Halifax Opportunities Trust where she has gained recognition for leading the Integrated Calderdale Citizenship Programme. She is a qualified ESOL practitioner in further education and is a member of the National Association for Teachers of English and Other Community Languages. Surraya has worked for Calderdale College as a Curriculum Course Leader and Lecturer. She has managed a series of European funded education programs specifically aimed at deprived communities, focussing on strengthening community cohesion and integration. Surraya is also a member of the Calderdale Interfaith Council.
Mr Martin Burton
Martin has 30 years’ experience in teaching and was Head of English and Drama at Queensbury Upper School in Bradford. His political career began as Agent and Parliamentary Researcher for Halifax MP Linda Riordan. Martin was elected to Calderdale Council in 2012 and served on various scrutiny committees including Children’s Services, Planning and Adult and Health & Social Care.
I am married with three daughters & six grandchildren, so I have plenty to keep me busy.
Mr Mike Reddy
Mike is a business architect with considerable experience in designing and developing service delivery in the private and financial sectors.
Mr Philip Shire
Philip’s background is in children's and adults social care and he was a senior officer at Calderdale Council until 2013, since when he has been taking on short-term interim roles with various councils. Philip has significant experience in strategic and public sector management.
Mr Nick Walker
Nick is a Programme Manager for Lloyds Banking Group responsible for leading a portfolio of Banking change programmes currently in the Self Service channel. Having started at Halifax Building Society as a Graduate Management Trainee, he has spent 20 years undertaking a range of leadership roles across a growing and changing organisation. As a business studies University Graduate, he has since become professionally qualified in Retail Banking, Financial Service provision and Programme Management Disciplines.
